The words, in plain language.
One paragraph each. If a word appears in a guide or on a regulation page, its definition is here.
- Digital Product Passport (DPP)
- The set of data a product must carry on the European market, attached to a unique identifier and reachable from a code printed on the product itself.
- ESPR
- Regulation (EU) 2024/1781. It is the framework that creates the passport and sets out which requirements the Commission may impose on a product group.
- Delegated act
- The later act that sets a product group's actual requirements: which fields are mandatory, which thresholds apply, and by when. For textiles it has not been adopted yet.
- Data carrier
- The physical object that leads to the passport. In fashion, in practice, a QR printed on the label.
- Tier
- The distance from a company to the finished garment. Tier 1 makes it, tier 2 supplies tier 1, and so on down to the fibre.
- Provenance
- The record of which document a value came from, on what date, and who confirmed it. Without it, a value is an assertion.
- LCA
- Life-cycle assessment: the method that estimates a product's impacts across all its stages, from raw material to end of life.
- PEF
- The European Product Environmental Footprint method, across sixteen impact categories. It is the base the French environmental cost is built on.
- Environmental cost
- The French scheme: a single number, in impact points, displayed with no colours and no classes. The lower the better.
- SNET
- The Italian textile eco-score proposed by a bill, graded A to E. The text defines no method, so no class is computable today.
- GS1 Digital Link
- The scheme the address inside the printed code is built on. It lets the same code always point at the current version of the passport.
- EPR
- Extended producer responsibility: the duty to contribute to collecting and treating products at end of life. In Italy and France it already covers textiles.
- DPP Registry
- The European Commission's registry. It holds identifiers and metadata, not passports: those stay with the operator or with its service provider.
- Measured share
- The part of an indicator computed from supplier documents rather than from public averages. It grows as the documents arrive.
